Choosing LASIK Surgery
LASIK corrective lens surgery is irreversible, and should not be undertaken without consulting first with your eye care specialist to learn all of the issues involved.
Not everyone is a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery. Ultimately, the decision you reach with your ophthalmologist will involve a number of important factors, such as the following:
Age: You must be at least 18, although there appears to be no upper age limit for LASIK surgery.
Vision Problems: LASIK surgery has been extremely effective in dealing with myopia (nearsightedness), and varying degrees of astigmatism. It is less often used for patients with hyperopia (farsightedness).
Cost: The cost of LASIK surgery is declining, but price is still the biggest barrier to many people interested in the procedure. But be wary of discounted offers; where your vision is concerned, it's wise to pay for the best care possible.
Experience: Ask your surgeon how many comparable procedures he has performed in the past. Also, ask how many procedures his laser equipment has performed.
Insurance: Many insurance plans do not cover LASIK surgery. Make sure to check your plan before deciding.
If you are convinced about the benefits of LASIK surgery, find a clinic and surgeon you're comfortable with before proceeding. If you are a contact lens wearer, you'll need to stop wearing contacts for at least two week prior to your surgery to allow your corneas to resume their normal shape.
